Golf breaks

St Andrews Old Course

Recognised across the world as The Home of Golf, St Andrews houses the oldest and most iconic golf course in the world where the game has been played for over 600 years.

Today St Andrews is the largest public golf complex in Europe where there are 7 courses to be played; the Balgove, Eden, Jubilee, Strathtyrum, The New Course, The Old Course and The Castle Course.

St Andrews is also home to the Royal and Ancient Golf Club, one of the most prestigious golf clubs in the world; founded in 1754.

In addition to the public courses there are two others privately owned by The Fairmont Hotel – The Kittocks and Torrance courses – where our guests can exclusively redeem 2 for 1 tee times.

A few miles south along the coast is Kingsbarns, renowned for its phenomenal views over the North Sea from every point of the course.

Hosting The Open more frequently than any other, The Old Course welcomes The Open once every 5 years with the next fast approaching in July 2021.

The Alfred Dunhill Links Championship is also held in St Andrews every Autumn, where one amateur (many familiar famous faces – you might spot Justin Timberlake or Jamie Dornan to name a couple) and one professional golfer pair up and compete in one of the richest golf tournaments on the European Tour.

Getting a tee time

As long as you have the necessary handicap (24 for men and 36 for women), obtaining a tee time on The Old Course is more straight forward than many people may think.

There are opportunities to make advance reservations although the demand is extremely high and many applications are denied. Fear not – nearly half of Old Course tee times each year are allocated to the ballot. The ballot is drawn 48 hours in advance of play where names, home club and handicaps must be provided online, by phone or given to the clubhouse by 2pm. Another option is the ‘walk up’. Be prepared for an early wake up call (hours you may not have seen for some time!) to join the orderly queue with coffee in hand at the Old Pavilion by the first tee on the day of play. The staff open up at 0600hrs, where they will try to fill in available slots to make up the necessary numbers.

If you are not too afraid of the unpredictable Scottish weather, the vast majority of courses are available to play throughout the winter months with substantially reduced green fees.

Alternatively, there are winter golf packages available where you can enjoy three rounds at the St Andrews Links including The Old Course.

Although we may not be able to provide you with tee times we can provide you with a wealth of local knowledge and excellent accommodation to enhance your golf trip. With over 30 properties situated in St Andrews, the vast majority of which are within walking distance to the Links courses, we have something to fit all budgets and group sizes – up to groups of 14 golfers in one house.
